New I Testing Requirements
I Testing Elements I FAQ
Effective July 1, 2008, the following changes begin:
1995 and Older Vehicles Exempted
Model Year 1968-1995 vehicles will no longer need to meet the emission testing requirement prior to license plate renewal or at the time the vehicle changes ownership and is registered.
Until July 1, we will continue to provide you with retests and diagnostic support as needed for your vehicle to fulfill its existing emissions inspection requirement. Because the statutory date is so near, however, you do have an option if your vehicle has failed the inspection. Even if you fail to pursue repairs or return for a retest, you will be cleared to renew your vehicle registration after June 30.
The choice is yours. However, here are several reasons to consider pursuing an appropriate vehicle repair:
In addition, 1968-1995 model year vehicles which have not started the testing process for newly purchased vehicles with a testing required before July 1, 2008 or license plate expiring before July 1, 2008 will not be tested.
1996 and Newer Vehicles Weighing More Than 8500 Pounds Exempted
All 1996 and newer vehicles weighing more than 8500 pounds will not require testing.
Gas Cap Test Eliminated
All vehicles receiving an OBD test will no longer require a gas cap test.
